Online Nikah

Is an online Nikah legal?

We believe in being completely honest with you, so here's the clear answer.

Your Nikah is your religious marriage

The Nikah we perform is a complete, valid Islamic marriage before Allah (SWT), fulfilling all of the Sharia requirements — consent, witnesses, mahr, wali, and Ijab & Qabul. Spiritually, you are married.

It is not, by itself, a legal civil marriage

In Canada, a legally-recognized marriage requires a marriage licence and a ceremony solemnized by an officiant who is registered with the province (for example, under Ontario's Marriage Act), with witnesses present. An online religious Nikah on its own does not meet those civil requirements.

How to complete the legal step

Many couples do their Nikah with us and separately complete the civil marriage in their province. In Ontario that means:

  1. Obtain a marriage licence from a local municipal office (city hall).
  2. Have the marriage solemnized by a registered officiant (a registered religious official, a judge/justice of the peace, or a municipal clerk) with the required witnesses.
  3. The officiant files the licence, and you can later request your marriage certificate from the province.

If you'd like both done, tell us in your booking (choose “Both Islamic & legal marriage”) or ask us on your free consultation, and we'll point you in the right direction.

Please note: this page is general information, not legal advice. Marriage rules vary by province and country; confirm the current requirements with your local authority.
